Hungry Ghost Festival 盂蘭勝會

Hungry Ghost Festival in Orthodox Chinese Culture (A tradition well-preserved in Hong Kong)
It's believed that on the 1st of July of the Lunar Calendar, the gate of the underworld opens and for the whole month, ghosts wander on the face of the earth. During this month, people burn offerings and place food on streets so that hungry ghosts can be fed. Different village associations also construct temporary temples and street theatres which host special Chiu Chau Opera performances both for the public and for the ghosts as well.

We would like to thank our friend Sylvia Midgett for the awesome tour of the festival.

Tung Tak Pawn Shop 同德大押

Historic buildings such as Tung Tak Pawn Shop have become increasingly rare in Hong Kong.   They may not be able to yield great financial profit if preserved, however they are extremely precious and valuable to our sons and daughters as they tell stories through their architecture and of the different times, whether good or bad, that they have endured.  They are living monuments of Hong Kong which  witnessed the many changes of our homeland.  What is more "valuable" to Hong Kong?  The redeveloped property or the original monument which grew up with Hong Kong as well as you and me?

Forbes Street Wall Tree

On 9 August, Urban Sketchers Hong Kong assembled at Forbes Street and spent a morning sketching the largest group of wall trees in Hong Kong.  The wall trees are Banyan trees (Ficus macrocarpa).  Their aerial roots grow on masonry walls in an intertwining manner and gradually thicken into wooden trunks, therefore attaching themselves firmly on the walls.  The combination of banyan trees with these pre-war masonry walls is truly an icon and treasure of Hong Kong and thus they should be well-protected!
